Week 8 Blog
Lab:
This week in lab we presented about different topics such as galaxies and the life cycle of a star. We learned that there are billions of stars in our galaxy. There are other galaxies in our universe that have billions of stars too. On Earth, we are all made of star dust. At the end of the life cycle of a star, they go through supernova which is when a star dies. The light from a supernova is brighter than anything in the galaxy.
Lecture:
We learned that the Earth wasn't created during the Big Bang, and light didn't occur until about 300,000 years after it. Our sun was formed from a stellar nebula which is dust and debris. It was interesting to learn that other solar systems have two suns but ours only has one. Our sun is about half way through it's life cycle. I was shocked to learn that 10,000 pounds of stuff hits the Earth every day but most of it burns in the atmosphere. There is a super massive black hole in the center of most galaxies. This provides the gravitational pull that holds it all together.
Pressbook:
The "bang" in the Big Bang theory isn't literally what happened. It was more of an expansion or inflation that occurred rather than a bang or explosion. Even though some people think the Big Bang created Earth, the Earth formed 9 billion years later. There are two sides of the moon and the dark side of the moon isn't actually dark. It is just the side of the moon that we can't see from Earth. The sun doesn't hit the dark side of the moon so which is why we can't see it. It was interesting to learn that women were the better people to go into space because they were lighter, shorter, and ate less. However, NASA made a requirement that astronauts had to be military pilots. This job was only available for men so NASA made this requirement as a way to say women couldn't do the job.
